  • In order to reach the protection level indicated by the sun protection factor, sunscreen products have to be applied in a quantity that is equal to 2mg/2cm; approx.1/3 teaspoon for face and neck and approx. 6 teaspoons for the body of an average adult.

  • Apply the sunscreen at least 30 minutes before exposure to the sun.

  • As UV rays reflect on snow, you can get burnt in unusual spots; when skiing, make sure you apply sunscreen under your chin, beneath the tip of your nose and behind your ears.

  • Re-apply frequently to maintain protection, especially when outdoors, after swimming, sweating or towelling.

SUN GLOSSARY
SPF:
The Sun Protection Factor [SPF] refers to the protection offered by a cosmetic product from ultraviolet UVB radiation. The SPF index is calculated by comparing the time needed to cause burns on a sunscreen-protected skin, with the equivalent time it takes to cause the same burn on unprotected skin.
UVB radiation:
The type of radiation that plays a key role in tanning while being the main cause of sunburn and photoaging. UVB radiation leads to the alteration of the most superficial layers of the skin. Its intensity varies with time and depends on the location and time of the day. UVB rays can burn and damage the skin all year-round, even at high altitudes as well as on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice.
UVΑ radiation:
UVA radiation represents 95% of the ultraviolet radiation that reaches the surface of the earth. Although UVA is less intense than UVB, its rays are 30 to 50 times more widespread and have almost the same intensity all day long. They penetrate into the deeper layers of the epidermis by damaging collagen and elastin, consequently accelerating the ageing of the skin.
IR:
The infrared radiation is also a photoageing factor, leading to the production of free radicals and by activating mechanisms that drive to the MMP-1 enzyme increase [enzymes that activate the mechanism of protein degradation: collagen, elastin, fibronectin main cause of wrinkles].
Dehydration:
The content in water, for a healthy skin, is 10-20%. Τhe skin is characterized dehydrated if the water content is less than 10%. Water is retained in the skin by its outer layer, keratin, with lipids playing a very important role in the process of maintaining skin moisture. Sun exposure is the cause of a gradual loss of water and lipids, resulting in the image of dry, prematurely wrinkled skin, even in young people.
Age Spots:
Skin spots known as solar spots (solar lentigines) or age spots, are flat spots of brown, black or gray colour. They are caused by hypersecretion of melanin and occur mainly in areas of the body most exposed to the sun, such as face, arms, shoulders.
Wrinkles - Skin Relaxation:
Wrinkles are skin folds created as the skin becomes less elastic and more sensitive , over time. UV radiation contributes significantly to accelerating this natural development since it destroys the connective tissue in the deeper layers of the skin. The connective tissue - collagen and elastin - is the one that is responsible for the firmness and elasticity of the skin, and the changes in its quantity and structure caused by exposure to the sun, resulting in the premature appearance of wrinkles and the relaxation of the skin.
